I can't believe that this car is stumping me! I bought an 85 base 900 from a kid for $50. He said he bought it, drove it around the block once, and it died in his driveway. Anyway, he thought it needed a fuel pump. I checked the pump before I accepted his diagnosis and found it to be fine. I charged the battery, put the iginition wires back on the correct plugs, changed the plugs, and fired it up. The car will start, rev up to 1000 rpm's, and then it just dies, if you touch the gas or not. My first guess was that it was something to do with the ignition, but I checked the coil and ignition module and both are functioning. I suppose he could have overheated the cat and burnt the wiring above the exhaust tunnel, assuming the heat shield is missing. I wish I could check the fuel mixture, but I don't have a dwell meter. I have tried swapping jetronic computers, but that changes nothing. The next option I can think of is swapping out a fuel distributor + fuel buzzer from a car that is known to run(I have several). Anyone have any ideas? It's just been so long since I've had to deal with these damn 8 valves.
thanks in advance!
