The 85 fuel pump relay takes the raw ignition pulses from the ignition module. There is a short time delay which allows the fuel pump relay to work before it requires the pulses to be inputed into the relay. If the pulses are not sensed by the relay by that time the fuel is cut off by the fuel pump relay. This would mean you could start the engine but it would die. Possible bad fuel pump relay or loose pulse sensing wire connection to the relay (possible).
