Can a bad thermostat destroy an O2 sensor?

I have a 89 900 NA with about 150k miles. I replaced the O2 sensor about 1 year ago (8000 miles) because I was experiencing hesitation during acceleration and poor fuel consumption (22-23 mpg vs. the 27-28 mpg I normally get). Since I owned the car (70k miles, 1996), the sensor had not been replaced, so I figured it was time. I used the generic Bosch sensor and soldered the wires to the old plug.
For the last couple of months, I know I have had a bad thermostat which was probably stuck open. It takes a very long time to warm up the engine (temp sensor on dashboard). I was going to deal with it for the 150k service. I did part of the service (plugs, rotor, distributor, plug wires, air filter, oil change, and brand new AMM (not remanufactured)). Did not have a chance to do the cooling system yet. The car runs very poorly now and I have that hesitation again. My last tank was 18 mpg. So something is very wrong. Could it be the O2 sensor again and why would it fail so quickly. Linked to the bad thermostat?
Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions, Harold
