I replaced the starter motor on my old '83T somewhere right around 200,000 miles. At the time, the dealership told me that it was not unusual for the motor itself to go bad. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to whether or not the starter would work, so I tried to park in places where the car would get a rolling start so that I could pop the clutch and drive away.

My starting ritual went something like this: 1) Turn the key. If successful, drive away. If not,2) pop the hood, grab a ski pole from the trunk. Thread the ski pole down past the exhaust manifold until the tip touched the starter motor housing, and give the handle a few good whacks, hopefully jostling the innards of the starter around a bit. Try the key again. Success? Yes- drive away. No? 3) get the car rolling, and pop the clutch.

I eventually grew tired of the verbal abuse I was receiving from my friends over the "needs to start his car with a ski pole" situation and got a new starter motor. The mechanic told me that the designers of the 16v motor had relocated the starter to the intake side and that this design was much more reliable. It makes sense to me that the problem is heat-related. A marginal electrical connection will get worse when heated, so you might want to try cleaning off the terminals of your starter and battery before buying another starter motor.
