Wally,
I've never done a starter job on an 8V, I took it to Tom Townsend. (I did do a starter job my Mom's 1990 16V, but that's no help to you...)
However, when I picked my car up from Townsend's shop, he said it didn't really need a new starter! He noted that he's seen the Bosch starters go "bad" after six months. When they go "bad," the symptoms would be intermittent no-start, occuring more and more frequently. The cause is an increase in the starter's need for amperage and it eventually gets to need so much that the wiring cannot provide enough amperage through the key-to-starter wiring. His fix: put a relay (solenoid) in the circuit to give full battery power to the existing starter when you turn the key.
He adds a generic (Ford) starter relay/solenoid into the SAAB circuit and mounts it on the passenger's side fender below the O2 sensor wire connection. The add-on relay got mine working again and it worked until that '84S got totalled in an accident (and even afterward).
So far, thank goodness, my current '84S hasn't any starting problems, but I know what to do if they occur: I'll simply uninstall what Tom did to the first '84S--it's my parts donor nowadays--and install it on my daily driver '84.
Below is Tom's wiring diagram, from his site, on putting a Ford solenoid into the SAAB 900 starter circuit. The link is for the how-to instructions.
Hope this helps!
