Water cooled turbo started in '88 and '89 got the bigger pinion bearing but Swedish Dynamics has a kit that has a stronger pinion than the bigger OEM pinion on the later Saabs that you can put in on the '88 like I had done. I would a avoid '90 on up because of ABS, SRS which is more to go wrong but maybe this stuff could be taken out when it fails and replaced with non ABS brakes and just take out the airbag when it fails.

Sounds like your better working on cars than I am so you would have fun. I find it easy to change all the belts w/o taking anything off such as water pump pulley. These car are very strong and a well maintained one will last a long time.

My mech says the C900s are easier to work on and fault diagnosis is simpler than the 9000 and you will have a car that looks like a Saab and not some Italian roadster.

Also '88 and '89 have the tranny drain plug which I prefer over the '90 and up where you have to take off a cover or use a siphon hose which seems like a poor way to get all crud out of there.

Gary Moore has 4 speed C900 trannies which he claims are good up to 300HP.
Also with the C900 you get the ignition between the seats where it should be.

Welcome aboard to the C900 club where we wave to each other as opposed to the 9000 and newer Saab where I don't see waving and smiling at other Saabs.

It isn't called a classic for no reason.

Best, KB.
