A few months ago, my SAAB had quite the electrical problem. My voltage regulator had gone bad and was putting voltage out on the high side. On my way to the garage to swap out the alternator, one of my battery cables popped off and stuff started going REALLY whacky. Headlights blew, CEL came on and just kept getting brighter and brighter. Well, I stopped the engine due to burning plastic smell and coasted it into the grass where it's sat. I found a ride home and since then, it's set.

Today, I decided to give it a try. Checked the computer, and it came up with code 12221. AMM bad. Went to the junk yard, got an AMM, put it in, same thing. It will start with no effort and sputter up to an idle about 750-800, but give it gas, and it will die. If you baby it, you can get the engine to rev up (or if you start it with the gas floored) - but it sputters like it's missing and the cat starts glowing red hot and smoking. I tried pulling each iginiton wire off to see if one wasnt firing, but it seems like they all are. Pulled each spark plug and they're all covered in carbon. Maybe it's not burning completely. I also got shocked by one of the boots, and it wasn't a very strong shock at all. Maybe something in the ignition is shot? It's an 88 900S, so it's got the EZK ignition. Is there any way to test it? The CEL is still on, but I haven't read the code yet.

Another thing is that it won't run on it's own power, that is, as soon as i take off the jumper cables, it dies. Would the alternator being completely toast (battery's dead) be enough reason for it not to run?

Sorry for the long post. I've been driving a 94 Thunderbird 3.8L, it's automatic, and sucks the gas. I miss my baby!!
