the engine running roughly might have been the event that pushed a previously fatigued found wire off the precipice.
If you have a multitester, run it with all of the accessories and lights on and check the voltage between the battery terminals and compare it with the voltage between the alternator case and the negative battery terminal. Other than wiggling the wire and getting it to arc, that's a good way to diagnose it.
