The current output capability of the alternator is a function of the size of the windings, not the voltage regulator. To get more current capability, you need a bigger, beefier alternator.
In general, the alternator size (current capacity) varied both with year and trim level. Cars with higher trim levels tended to come with more options (electric windows, power seats, power sunroof, fog lights....), things which require more power, so they would install a bigger alternator.
It almost never hurts to put in a bigger (higher capacity) alternator. If you're going to install a killer stereo system, or you've installed some driving lights, a bigger than 'stock' alternator is a good idea.
A good approach would be to contact some of the mail order places that advertise on the BB (see the bottom of the page), and ask them what the biggest alternator you can fit would be.
Stock alternators sometimes had plenty of capacity, and sometimes were marginal. Adding additional electrical loads can make an adequate alternator marginal, and a marginal stock alternator inadequate.
