I know it sound weird, but I have lived with a flooding on my '88 8 valve for 6 years now. Check the plugs. Are they wet? If so, pull the fuse on the fuel pump and crank it. If it starts after 10 second or so it means it was flooded. It will run for a few minutes and if fact if you are swift you can jump out and stuff the fuse in before it runs out of gas and it will run then. Possibly (in my case) an injector sticks open. It is worst when it is cold in the morning and warms up in the day. No problems in hot summer or cold winter--only the transitional seasons.
Car has run beautifully otherwise, so I have learned to live with its seasonal vagaries.
I discovered this right after I got the car and it would not start one day. I thought , "Plugged fuel filter," and so bought a new one and installed it and it ran fine. I thought I was a genius, but it turns out I had just deprived the system of fuel for a bit, long enough for it to clear its throat of excess gas before the filter filled with gas. I don't think the problem re-occured for 6 months (until fall), but it has persisted ever since.
