I know the prevailing advice was that we had a bad fuel pump relay. But when we jumped it, the pumps ran, and the car still didn’t run. We kept thinking it should at least have tried to start when we jumped it. One of the diagnostics suggested was to jump the pump, lift the throttle plate to prime it, then try and start it with the bellows disconnected. We did it, the car started, but wouldn’t stay running. We primed again, put the bellows back on, car started, then stalled. So...we knew we had spark, we knew we had fuel, but something was keeping it from running. We then began going down the line and “fiddling” with stuff, checking hoses, connections, etc…fiddled with the wires and on the “pressure impulse switch” which is just below the fuel filter, and..BINGO, car started and kept running. Turns out, the insulation on the wires to the pressure impulse switch had crumbled and had exposed the wires. Who knew? We put our relay back in place, and it still started. And…it idled at 1000 rpms. We will splice new wire and connectors onto the switch. We will now replace the air filter (which we removed to see if THAT was the problem) and will replace vacuum hoses. Hopefully, there isn’t anything else that is wrong!
Thanks again for all your help and all the suggestions. The diagnostics that everyone gave us were a godsend. We really had no idea where to begin, other than to look at the engine and scratch our heads! It saved us a lot of time, and a lot of money, we were able to eliminate alot of possibilities, without spending alot of money. So now, this is about a $20.00 repair!
On an aside...if you have an 85 and need a pump relay, we found out that Saab switched the type of relay it used midway thru the year. So if you need a relay, make sure you bring your current relay with you so they can get the correct one.
