A check valve is a valve that will allow air or any fluid to go 1 way but not the other.
I don't know about the 87's but the 88's and 89's all had a PCV (pressure control valve I think) in the vacuum line from the valve cover to the intake manifold.
As far as you not getting any air from the center I'd check the wiring to the selector switch. it should turn the fan on full blast when clicked one from the off position. This should come out of the center and other vents.
