White smoke after head & turbo job

Over the summer some friends and I have changed the cylinder head on my '87 8 valve, as well as the turbo. The initial problem was an enormous coolant leakage into the turbo and from there to everywhere possible, including the intercooler and intake manifold.
The new problem upon initial startup is an enormous amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust. A small amount was coming from the turbo as well. Seeing this we immediately shut down the engine and called it a day (pressed for time, not scared!). I later called a mechanic about it, who thought the engine was just burning remains of old coolant.
Is it possible that old coolant has dried up and eventually solidified inside the intercooler and intake manifold, and that the air flow is now gradually forcing this residue to the cylinders for burning? I can not believe that a overhauled cylinder head would leak! It's already been tested on another engine. Seeing that the gasket is also new, I'm really looking for other solutions.
Please help, any ideas?
Best regards,
Jimmy Schmincke
