How about a 300+ hp turbo Porsche motor and rear suspension? Just cutaway the rear floorpan and wheel houses, mount the engine and suspension points in a tube frame carrier and position it in the car, then add/weld steel as needed to connect the carrier to the body. Open the hatch to service the motor a la Ferrari.
Of course there are a million other things to consider to complete the job (like the heat making the headliner sag), but that's the idea. Its my project when I hit the lottery. The hard part will be changing the rear badging to read "SAAB 911"
