the torx screws that hold the shift ball into the shifter assembly. To check the torx screws, pull up the shift lever boot - you're looking for the 3 torx screws at the base of the shift lever. That'll be obvious if they're loose.
The shift rod coupler isn't all that easy to take out, but it's better than a whole transmission.
