If the present paint on the bumper is in good condition, you don't HAVE to strip it off. The original finish may be the best base you can have. Stripping is alot of work, and won't necessarily produce a better finish. If the present paint is cracking or checked, peeling, or in otherwise poor condition, then strip it. Go to your local auto paint supply store, and ask their recommendation on strippers. I've used chemical strippers (Bulldog spray)on SPG panels...it took many coats, and it did damage the surface slightly. I had to repeatedly prime and sand to get it smooth. Toooo much work! ....Next time I'll just sand smooth and repaint.
A general refinish procedure would be:
Wash bumpers with soap and water.
Wipe down bumpers with wax and grease remover.
Wet sand with 320 or 400 grit sandpaper.
Wipe down with wax and grease remover.
Prime (I like PPG's epoxy primers)
Paint with color....I used PPG's Concept DCC acrylic urethane. The paint store can look up the paint mix. It'll be in their sample book. Proper color is Anthracite Grey, Saab code 178. It does not require a clearcoat. Be aware the proper finish is a semi-gloss.
Expect to pay $30 for a pint of paint, $25 for 8 oz of hardener, and maybe $10 for the reducer. Soooo....consider having a shop shoot it for you.
