If this is the '87 that you posted about previously, I'll assume that it has a gearbox and shifter for an '87.
First, you need to adjust the shifter. Follow the link below to Townsend Imports site on adjusting the shifter. Pretty straightforward - except that getting to the shifter pinch bolt can be a pain. The fastest way for me is to put the car up on jack stands, get underneath the engine with my feet to the back, and thread my right arm past the exhaust downpipe and over the steering rack. It's dirty and greasy, but it's fast.
You shouldn't need to force the shifter into reverse at all. Are you pulling up on the sleeve at the top of the shifter boot?? If you aren't, then that's a good reason for the hulk-type effort. If you are, maybe adjusting the shifter will be the fix. It's also possible that the shift rod coupler is bad.
