Here is the scenario and the reason for my confusion:
When I bought my 1990 900S (16v Non-Turbo) the Rad cooling fan would not come on as the coolant temperature climbed towards the Red zone. Both fans worked fine with the A/C switched on.
I replaced the Fan ThermoSwitch (and the Thermostat - both Saab OEM) and then as the temperature gauge reached about 2/3 on the green scale, (A/C off) both fans would come on but would cycle off and on every 20-30 seconds. Temperature stayed about 2/3. With ignition off no fans were running.
Following advice from this Board, I tried a jumper between contacts #30 & #87 on the Rad Fan timer relay. This caused the Passenger side fan only to run continuously regardless of temperature (ie. Thermoswitch open or closed) or ignition on or off. With ignition On both fans were running. I removed the jumper to avoid a flat battery.
Further info. pointed me to a Saab Bulletin on the Townsend Imports site which recommended replacing the Rad. Fan Timer relay #9663339 with a regular relay #8522310. This was duly ordered and installed last night.
Now as soon as the engine is started from cold (ThermoSwitch open, A/C switch off) both fans are running continuously and the A/C Compressor is engaged (with normal compressor cycling on/off) !!!
Now I'm really confused. Obviously there is some electrical connection between the Rad. Fan Relay and the A/C Relay that is bringing on the compressor and the two cooling fans (which is normal when A/C is switched ON) regardless of the Thermoswitch or A/C switch. Does anybody have any insight into this problem or suggestions as to how to get things back to normal?
Normal is, I assume, that with A/C off the Rad fan only will cycle on and off when the ThermoSwitch closes/opens regardless of ignition position. With A/C ON then both fans will run continuously if ignition switch is also on. Am I correct in this assumption?
Sorry for the looooong Post.
Andy.
