I've always heard it's a low-quality filter (like Fram) that can cause excessive tick, but I've never used poor filters & my '90 N/A has always had a slight tick on startup ever since I bought it nearly 5 yrs ago. It gets worse if I start the car & run it briefly several times (like pulling it in & out of the garage, or moving it in from the driveway to the street & back). When I bought the car, I started using Castrol GTX 10W-30 & Mann oil filters, & have used Syntec 10W-30, Mobil 1 15W-50, & ACDelco, Bosch Premium or Purolator PureOne filters. The tick's always there.
Until recently.
When I last needed some top-up oil, I added some older Saab OE 5W-30 semi-syn to my current run of M1 15W-50. It was only about 4oz of oil, but the tick went away for several months & just returned last weekend. I'm thinking it's Saab's diesel-style oil, with the extra anti-wear additives, that quieted the engine. The older stuff I'm using is a little different than the current "syn blend" 5W-30 oil Saab sells. The additives are similar, but the new oil's only rated ACEA A1, where the older stuff was rated A3.
Because of this, I ordered some Auto-Rx to safely clean out the engine's internals, & I'll probably try a combo of Mobil 1 xW-30 (ACEA A5, which has similar durability to A3) & Mobil's Delvac 1300 Super (diesel 15W-40 oil, which has the better A3-style temperature & shear protection) after the cleaning.
