Yeppers, my 7+ foot couch fit inside neatly, doors and hatch closed, no problem. (OK, ok, ok, there's a trick: I took out the front passenger's seat, AND the couch was one that was easily disassembled: front rail (6') back (6'x30"), ends (~36x36) and cushions) But it did fit and my friends were awestuck.
I also moved a sleeper-sofa in it. The key here was--guess what?--disassembly. It was a fancy (for the time) one from Fields, cost my girlfriend an arm and a leg, and it was EASY to remove the folded bed from the couch to lighten the load. BUT FIRST...use STRONG wire to totally restrain the folded-bed in the FOLDED position. Then I removed four lag-screws, and carried the bed out and came back for the couch. Two Saab-trips.
Now why the @()$&*%^&^ did GM decide no more hatchback-Saabs in the US? I still wish Ford had bought them...
