I don't drive much, so i inevitably need to replace some part of the exhaust system every 1 1/2 to 3yrs.
Last piece replaced was a catlytic converter 15 months/4000 miles ago. One week after installation the car needed to go back in to tighten it up as it started to growl, and althugh 'good', it never seemed quite right.
Well now the exhaust is growing louder and it seems (not certain, but seems) that the leak is near the catalytic converter area (as per suggested on this board, i tried listening while covering the tailpipe).
Mechanic put car on lift and when i called back i was told that the inside of the muffler is no good. I went to the shop and the mechanic said that he didn't see anything wrong with the system and therefore thinks the muffler is bad. I told him my thought that the leak was coming from mid-car and did the 'cover the tailpipe' test with him. He said it didn't sound too bad, but he'd order a couple of gaskets and see if that fixes it (i guess he's willing to try this before replacing the muffler).
So my question(s)...
besides replacing one at a time, anyway to check if muffler is bad or leak elsewhere in the system? If the muffler needs replacement, are the Starla/Walker from site sponsors decent enough, and if they're good, any difference between these and another aftermarket brand the mechanic would get (from Napa i presume). What sort of labor time would be involved in having the mechanic replace the muffler?
Sorry for the length, but trying to be thorough.
Thanks!
