Short distance driving takes its toll on exhaust systems, brakes, and spark plugs at an accelerated rate. A muffler can look virtually new on the surface and be rotted away inside. The only way to determine this is to take it off and listen to whatever is left inside.
I replaced mine, from the cat-back, with a Starla system 3 years ago. I don't rack up too many miles per year either. Complete with hangars, gaskets, and clamps for $129; and I think its even less now. I did coat it with a high-heat paint to avoid the rusty-look and it has held up very well....still has the same sound that it was always supposed to have and still has the paint coating with no flaking.
Doing one pipe at a time almost guarantees you that at least two pipes will fuse together when you need to replace only one. For the price I paid and doing it yourself, you need not worry for several years. I have replaced many exhaust systems, but, this was the nicest fitting one I have ever done. Once you get those 4 bolts off of the cat-to-rear pipe, the rest is very easy. Be sure to replace those 4 bolts with stainless steel and anti-seize compound.
