1. Make sure you have enough antifreeze in the cooling system (concentration and amount) to prevent freeze-up. Also run through some gas line anti-freeze and top off the washer fluid.
2. FOUR SNOW TIRES.
3. 5W-30 is fine for me. I use Mobil 1 but the car was okay with mineral oil for twelve years before that.
4. When at UB, park next to me. I'm not kidding. Too many rice jets there. I know of only 2-3 other C900s around campus.
5. Make sure your heater valve doesn't leak. That will make defrosting difficult.
6. Seal up any holes in your paintwork before they start slinging the salt.
7. Delta-Sonic Coupon Books. I did this all last winter. Four days after my last wash I drive up in a filthy black slush and white car, explain how it "seems to have gotten dirty" and in you go again for free.
8. Make sure your doors seal. I needed to adjust the latches to get the rears to shut on my car.
9. Get a good ice scraper and snow brush.
10. Drive defensively- you don't know how many times someone ran a red light and almost killed me last year. I call it the "Amherst Reflex." Whatever you call it, I would be sans Saab right now if I didn't learn it. It's a serious problem in this city.
For snowy pictures, send me an e-mail. I'm not a fan of the buflonian road system, but the car seemed to take it last year. Also don't force the gears any harder than normal when the car is warming up from deep freeze. I changed to synthetic trans. oil in mid-February and it helped, yes. I swear I AM going to fix the seat heaters, finally, next month.
It might be colder in Maine as the lakes regulate the temperature here.
Then again, the wind is baaad. Park out of the breeze if you can.
