The older three pin ones you could see burned spots where the brushes had eaten down into the commutator, but on those you could also see the same burned spot by using an Ohm meter reading the resistance over the 3 pins.
The 3 pin one had a resistance reading of 20-40-20 Ohm over the pins but the 2 pin one only have 8 Ohm not leaving many clues to why it's not performing properly.
Volvo have used the same style 2 pin AIC since 88 and those fail in much higher rates than the Saab 2 pin ones without leaving any good clues to what happened to them.
