We just replaced the serpentine belt, and its not the harmonic balancer. We're pretty confident that the timing chain or the timing chain tensioners/slider arms are worn out. It sounds like there is metal to metal contact. If there is an issue with the timing chain, might there also be an issue with the balnce shaft(s) chain/tensioners in the near future (car has 177,000 miles)? Would it be prudent to replace these items too at this time? From what we can understand from the Haynes manual, in order to gain access to the balance shaft(s) and their drive chains, it is neccessary to remove the motor. I am not sure I understood this correctly. Do you think we misread this and it is only neccessary to pull the motor to remove the actual balance shaft, and that access too and replacement of the balance shaft chains/tensioners is possible without removing the engine? Also, would it be wise to do the head gasket at the same time b/c the manual suggests that it might be damaged when the timing cover is removed?
We don't want to get too out of control...is dropping in a replacement motor a more viable option...we've only got 3 hours a week to work on this...and we'd like to be able to use the car before next June!
Sorry for the length, and thanks for taking the time to read this. Any suggestions are appreciated...we're counting on the classic Sabb guys' expertise (so much for the NG board)! THANK YOU!
