1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
I have two classic 900's...a 1990 base and a 1994 turbo convertible, and I have a 2000 9-3SE.
I love them all....including the 2000. It takes a while for it to grow on you but once it does you'll find yourself admiring it just almost as much as the classic. It still has lines that remind you of a classic 900. I just put a set of 17" aero wheels on mine and it looks very sweet now. It is a completely different driving experience than a classic as you would think...but once you drive it a while you still find yourself smiling. It is a 4 cylinder turbo....205HP and good torque. It is a fun car. It does not handle like a classic 900 but it doesn't handle like crap though and the interior is nice but not as functional as a classic.
That said....I can't part with either of my classics. I was going to sell the '90 but I've put so much time into it I just can't. The convertible will be with me forever.
If it is going to be your only mode of trasport then you will miss the classic. From a reliability standpoint....The 2000's recieve very high marks. I'm not really sure what Randy is talking about.
The thing to remember with everyone bashing a 9-3 here is this....the original design of the NG900/9-3 dates back to 1988 when SAAB started the work on a replacement to the classic. Remember the classic 900 was a derivative design of the 99 which was designed way back in the 1970's. SAAB never has moved fast. I may be wrong but GM did not take full ownership of SAAB until much, much later than '88. So....it is a SAAB design. This appears to be changing now with GM's renewed interest in SAAB now.....it looks like they will unfortunately be spitting out a different model soon. That I am not a fan of and am dissapointed.
There are lots of good deals on something like a 2000 9-3 out there too. Certified pre-owned is a nice way to go. I've got a few months remaining on factory warranty and then an extended warranty to 90K miles. Believe me...it is very nice to have a car that you don't have to worry about. Leaving the dealer service dept. with a zero balance due is a nice feeling.
Hope that helps....email me if you have any specific questions.....
