God bless the Sears Craftsman Engine Analyser/dwell meter! I bought one for fine tuning some time back. Back when I didn't have one and chasing down vac leaks and had to reset the air fuel mix, I was told that for a basic setting, turn the screw to a rich setting, or until the engine runs evenly while idling, then turn the screw back until it begins having difficulty idling, then turn it in 1/4 increments until the sputtering goes away. That's a basic setting. But in colder weather, I found that the setting was a bit too lean, as indicated by the engine struggling to idle until it warmed up. But, that was more an indication of the buggy lambda/O2 sensor/temp sensor problem with the early models. To get it to run better in cold temps the options were three: reset the fuel air mix to a more rich setting for the colder months, install an O2 sensor kill switch to operate it manually, flipping it on only after the engine warms up (I've done this before and it works) or just increase the idle setting. I opted to just increase the idle 50-75 rpms above it's recommended high setting during the cold weather.
