The first time, it's easiest to do it the way Jeff describes.
Remove center console in front of gearshift, remove knee bolster, remove ventilation ducts below dash, and the heater core is exposed. Detach the two hoses in front of the firewall, and detach the heater control rod from the valve. Pull the entire heater core/valve out of the car, and replace the heater valve.
Then put everything back together again :o)
