Strange high idle after boost

The 85 turbo did something pretty strange today. After driving under heavy boost, I had to stop at a red light. While waiting for the light to change to green, the idle went from a rock steady 900rpm to 2500 rpm oscillating about plus or minus 100 rpm. The engine wouldn't respond to throttle. I had to shut down the car by turning the ignition off . After restart, the engine ran perfectly again...

This is the first and only time I've ever seen this happen in th e12 years I have owned this car. Has anyone ever seen something like this before?
