Hi,
Yesterday my battery light came on faintly for a few minutes and then my electrics started to fail (Radio shutting off, wipers moving slowly, etc.) The light never came on again but the bulb works fine. The car then stalled and the battery was completely dead. I was able to get the car the 15 minute drive home thanks to a friend that followed me and jump started the car 3 times (becuase the battery just kept getting drained. A bit overzealous, he wanted to yank the alternator and take it to a rebuild shop immediately. 3 hours later we got it out. Now I have determined 2 things:
1) only one of the two belts were on. When the 2nd one fell off I don't know.
2) When I removed the voltage regulator, I noticed one of the brushes had receeded almost all the way in. I played with it a bit and was able to free it up so it springs back and forth like it should. They are both worn pretty even and there is 8mm left. All the connections, i.e. ground looked fine.
Questions are:
Would these two issues have caused the problem?
Is it a waste of money to get the alternator rebuilt at this point in time?
The car is an 1989 900TC with 132,000Kms on it.
Thanks
Norm
