When the brushes are worn down below their service limit, they don't make good contact with the slip rings and alternator output doesn't keep up with power draw. You then get the symptoms you describe.
It wasn't helped by the loss of the alternator belt. You lucked out on that one - when the one belt broke, it could have taken the other belts with it.
Unless you see a lot of corrosion residue around the coils or rough alternator bearings, it probably is a waste of money to rebuild the alternator.
Now that you have the alternator out, you may want to replace the alternator bushings on general principles.
As far as placement goes ... well, it's the best location considering the engine orientation. Everything is a compromise. It wasn't so bad before the A/C compressor was shoehorned in. (That's the price we pay for comfort.)
The Townsend Imports site has a good procedure for alternator R&R. One thing that will be helpful when you install the belts is taking off the water pump pulley.
