I have an '88 900 with the eight valver. I like it too.
Three simple things can play tricks with your cold start behavior that I'll recommend you look after regardless of symptoms, just because it's going to be saturday soon.
1. Clean the intake (throttle body, orifices, and venturi plate (carefully!) of the gunk that's sure to be there.
2. Shoot some penetrating oil in the idle valve (AIC describes the system on LH cars)
3. Hook up a sensitive tachometer to your car (the gauge in the car is not sufficient) and make sure the idle is oscillating a bit. This, along with a buzz from the pulse relay on the driver's fender, usually mean the O2 sensor are working.
I don't think the '86 cars had a heated O2 sensor (three wires going in) so it may take a little while longer for them to become active. However, our 85 (RIP for this one too) and my car both did their little cold start thing, usually at its worst around 60 degrees outside. The "chugging" got better when I cleaned the intake and zapped the idle valve. Aside from that, I'm going to lean toward this:
It's normal for the car. Give it time to warm up and take it easy for the first couple minutes, it'll be picky but you won't stall. I try to start moving as quickly as possible (for mileage) but accelerate very slowly during the initial period.
Is this your first experience with an 8 valve 900? If so, this page may help.
