diagnosis a troubled cooling system?

I've got a 1990 900S with a problem, presumably in the cooling system. I'm hoping someone can provide some clues before I go meddling around blindly and screw something up.
The car fails to restart when stopped after being driven more than a few minutes. Starter will turn, but it won't go. I presume this occurs because it's hot...or thinks it's too hot. (This happens when the temp. gauge is even less than half way to Hot) Car will eventually start after resting at least half an hour.
Every now and then, when cold, the car will start immediately with no cranking. Which eems odd...like it's almost starting too quickly.
Also, after freeway driving, or heavy stop-and-go, it will start to idle fast and drive jerky. In these situations, the car in neutral will try to accelerate. I have to ride the brake to keep from lurching forward.
And now, to top it off, a leak of fluid from under the dash onto the pedals. I think it's antifreeze...though I could be wrong (thought it had a blueish tint). This may be unrelated, as it just started happening. But what under the dash could be leaking anti-freeze or anything else anyway?
Don't know much about cars, but I know I just spent $1000 having my axles repaired...So I'd like to see if I can fix this before committing it to a real mechanic. Thanks, if you can help.
