clutch slave replacement question -- tips/tricks?

not too long ago i rebuilt my clutch master cylinder because of erratic clutch pedal pressure -- and, a day or two later, the clutch pedal went back to being erratic along with dumping all of the fluid in the system. from what i've read on saabnet this is a clutch slave problem (fluid is dumping in the clutch area, the rubber hose behind the clutch master looks great w/ no leaks.) i'm now ordering a clutch slave cylinder as we speak.
so, any suggestions on doing this? helpful hints or anything of the sort?
my biggest question is this: it looks like everybody goes through all sorts of hell to depress the pressure plate. i can get my clutch operational again by adding fluid and pressure bleeding it. if i do this then depress the clutch pedal, does it depress the pressure plate? if so, i can do this then have somebody stick a bucket handle/spark plug wire into it to keep it depressed, correct? maybe?
