i had good luck with the copper wire. one thing you might consider doing is bending the wire such that its circumference is larger than that required to fit beneath the fingers. this way, there is some spring force in the wire that will help push it as far beneath the fingers as possible. i found that a helper pushing the pedal in while i worked in the wire made life easier. i used the screwdriver, too, but didn't need the hammer.
if you are going to replace the whole clutch, buy enough wire for 2 plates; this way, you don't need to retrieve the wire from the old plate in order to get the new one in. if you are going to have the flywheel re-surfaced, bring the new pressure plate along to the machine shop and have them put the wire in using their press -- takes no time at all with the right tools...
once you get the clutch bits out, you may want to spend some time cleaning up the area beneath the clutch. this way, you don't risk contaminating the clutch disk if you drop it while re-fitting.
