Spider gears in differential very rarely goes bad. And Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Hypoid gear noise or pinion bearing?, Kenzo, Thu, 30 Oct 2003 14:54:36 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
when they do it is usually because the transmission has been driven for a long time with bad pinion bearings and lots of shavings in the oil.
In a couple of cases have I seen the curved cup behind spider gear being worn out, but the rest of transmission was toasted too.
If you mean the ring and pinion gear, it is the same scenario. IF the transmission has been allowed to crunch away for a long time, it could have developed worn spots on the teeth, in which the transmission is toast too.
Saab have lowered the price on factory rebuilt trannies, so it's less and less favorable to rebuild those units.
Years ago it was a breaking point that if the ring and pinion was damaged it was no use to rebuild if you had to use new parts.
Now it's enough if the reverse and maybe first gear is bad to scrap the tranny and go for a factory rebuilt one instead.
