At idle or in traffic below 30 MPH, the temperature needle rises to the very top of the range, and there is NO heat. I'm thinking that the rush of air over the motor at higher speeds is enough to cool it. The odd thing is that the main warning (or overheat idiot light) does NOT come on; maybe even at the top of the range, the coolant still isn't quite hot enough to light it.
My impression is that the Saab 900 has a weird (sorry, guys) water circulation scheme; on a "normal" car, the thermostat merely controls whether coolant gets to the radiator or not, and the heat works normally even when the thermostat is stuck closed. How does a thermostat being stuck "open" prevent coolant circulation to the radiator and the heater core? Perhaps if I better understood the coolant flows, that would help.
Anyway, I revert to my first post: Overheats at idle and in traffic, needle drops somewhat at speed, no heat. Thermostat? Waterpump? Something else?
