I think you may have a couple of problems...

On (I think) 91 and latter 900s, the heater hoses were changed from previous version and incorporated a valve (you can see this valve right above the alternator connecting the heater hoses together) which often fails blocking coolant flow to the heater core at idle and in slow moving traffic producing no heat on an otherwise warmed up car. The problem goes away once normal cruising is resumed. This maybe combined with what Kevin K suggests as well. My guess is that the valve if original is probably toast. This valve as well as thermostats and various other cooling system/heat systme components can be picked up at any of the site sponsors (my personal favorite is sobstory but eeuroparts has some descriptive diagrams of the coolant system as well on their website). Good luck troubleshooting.
