I've always removed the shifter with the key in the run position and the shifter out of reverse. This makes reinstallation much easier, because the reverse lockout is no longer engaged.
Also, don't remove the bend from the reverse lockout actuator rod (I don't know what else to call it). The easiest way to reinstall it is to position the shifter upright on a table with the spring loaded reverse lock out pin in the bottom. Use tweezers to re-thread the actuator rod back into the lockout pin. Once it is threaded back in, turn the lockout pin so that approx. 1/8th - 1/16th of an inch of the shoulder is exposed, put the plastic ball on, and reinstall the cotter pin. Don't forget to put the metal retaining ring on first because it won't fit past the plastic piece! This is the only way I have successfully reassembled these shifter mechanisms in the past.
When you go to reinstall everything, just make sure the key is in the run position so it doesn't get stuck on the wrong side of the reverse lockout.
Good luck !!!
