Shifter ball fiddling

Got a box full o' parts the other day and started working on the Saab again last night.
I first started with the voltage regulator. I did not get a Bosch one, but some aftermarket model that needed to be modified in two places and was much bigger than the Bosch. If you are doing this soon, for goodness sakes bite the bullet & get the Bosch!
I then tried to tackle the shifter ball (I have the classic rotating lever symptom). Removed console, remove the brass? "cap" held down with three screws over the top of the ball, remove three torx screws on the aluminum "frame" covering the lower part of the ball (i.e. the top is a circle, below it is a shaft, and below that is a half circle - that half-circle is still held in place somehow). Now what? I've pulled and yanked and twisted and I cannot see how the base of it comes out.
I also tried to unscrew that long "pin" in the shift lever shaft that I believe is connected to the reverse lockout. I got sick of twisting and yanked up on the plastic collar...it came off (just BRILLIANT) and now I'm wondering (a) how hard it is to actually remove that damn pin, and (b) how hard it is to put it back. I might end up just bending that 90 degree angle at the top straight to reinstall the collar.
Thanks for any guidance. I left about a pint of blood on the alternator last night and am trying to resist the urge to smash ;)
