wonky shifter on 86 Notchback getting out of R Posted by Saabu [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Hi all,
i've checked the archives but don't see my particular problem mentioned (incredible i know).
This car has the 'newer' centering mechanism (in other words, not the old spring style ).
the shifter works fine going into all gears, but getting out of reverse the mechanism seems to hang up and takes alot of jiggling, praying, etc to get it out.
At first i thought the reverse lockout was malfunctioning. i have dismantled the whole housing and mechanism, checked that the reverse lockout mechanism is working correctly and is not the culprit.
As i had the heater channel out, i noticed that the shifter rod-to-tranny is not centered in the hole (it is to the drivers side of the orifice), and surmise that the coupler could be hanging up against the side of the rubber 'seal' as the rod rotates out of reverse gear.
So, my question is, can this lateral adjustment be fixed? the shifter housing has no left-to-right adjustment, just the two slotted holes at the front and the single hole at the rear.
Will the '3rd gear' adjustment method i've read about address this problem?
any help much appreciated
