dashboard lighting on crack

The dashboard lights on my '88 900S come on occasionally. Their on/off status has nothing to do with what I specify in lighting controls, but occasionally beating on the dashboard or an especially severe pothole leads to them flashing on for 15 minutes or so.
Today I took out the driver's side speaker/vent and took the photo below. I noticed that three wires dangle loose in the compartment. Should they?
Troubleshooting this may be more than I am capable of at this stage in my life. Are there any easy checks someone might suggest?
thanks!
