I just went through the same problem a few weeks ago. I added a second ground wire to the alternator. Also make sure that the small green wire is securely attached to the alternator, otherwise the dash light will not go on and it will not charge.
After I got everything fixed, I turned the ignition on, but the alternator dash light still did not come on. I thought I had not hooked up the wires properly, but I noticed that after I revved up the engine, the alternator light flashed on & off once. Since then the light has always come on when I turn the ignition on.
