A few simple tests.
First, be certain the light bulb is not burned out, sounds simple, but on a older car it is quite possible for the bulb to be bad or the socket/circut board to have a poor connection.
A simple test of the alternator. The heavy wire that goes to a terminal stud on the rear of the unit, near the voltage regulator is the battery cable. With the car running, measure the voltage at the stud to ground. Should be on the order of 13+ volts. If you register 12 or lower the alternator is defective.
Next simple test, with the car not running, turn on the key and measure voltage at the small wire, I believe it is blue, that goes to the alternator fields, should be battery voltage. If you measure nothing then you have an issue with wiring, the bulb, some connections. Either way find a charging system schematic and troubleshoot away. It is a simple system requiring no more than a DVM (Digital Volt/Ohm Meter) to diagnose.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Bruce
