Is the car a standard or automatic?
If standard, does the noise go away when depressing the clutch? The older standard trans often make noise at a low idle.
If auto, does it change when moved in or out of gear?
80K miles on a well maintained car is premature for chain and/or guide failure. It can happen, but is the exception to the rule. I find that chain noise is much more common when the engine is warm and the oil less viscious (thinner).
Again on lifters, they do failure, but make a tapping noise, again often when warm not just cold. Unless a lifter is leaking down and bleeds out it's oil when sitting.
You mention the car "runs smooth" after a minute. By this do you to state that the engine does not run smooth during the period of noise and warm up?
Cheers,
Bruce
