Since it is thanksgiving break my father and I are going to be working on the clutch. Something had failed on me about 4 weeks ago. I was wondering if anybody had any last opinions. And I have been doing a lot of research in the archives and I will chronologically(earliest to latest) list every problem I have seen mentioned in other posts that are similar to mine.
It's a 1988 5 speed 900s with 115k after purchasing the car I got a bill that said clutch assembly(don't know exactly what that means) was replaced it had costs about 250 parts and 150 labor. 20k ago. My father rebuilt the master cylinder because he thought a new slave had been put it but it turns out a new slave probably was put in based on the cost of parts above
*Can not downshift into second unless going less than about 15mph and under roughly 2000rpms
*I have to shift into another gear before going into reverse to avoid the reverse crunch
*There had always been a loud pumping/'pshhh'sound the moment the clutch was depressed and until it was released. It stopped doing is once on a short trip, but after i started the car back up the sound had returned.
*At the beginnig of one errand I shifted into first and started going and the car just stopped as if I had put the e-brake on. It did this twice and then it was fine. It was cold out(10 degrees) when it happened. Next time I started the car I let it warm up for a little bit before going and there was no problem.
*something failed about 4 weeks ago, and i was unable to disengage the clutch. It started to squeal then but only when clutch pedal was depressed(regardless of how much), there was the smell of burning asbestos, and there was a little smoke coming up from the front of the car.
*i had to move my car about 2 weeks ago i shifted into neutral before starting the car so i wouldn't have to use the clutch. The squealing noise was still there even though the clutch wasn't depressed and it was in neutral.
Any last ideas?
I am thinking the pilot bearing and/or the slave cylinder
thanks
