Help! My dream car, an '86 900T that I wanted since 1980 (before I even had a drivers license), I finally bought used in 1990. It was a low mileage, immacculetly kept one owner car when I bought it with ALL maintenence record. For 14 years I have continued to keep it well maintained. It was a Euro-program delivery car with all kinds of unique Euro options and accessories, such as the Airflow styling ground effects and some SPG upgrades (although it is not actually an SPG) I have had every intention to keep the car indefinetly or at least another 10 years when my son starts driving or unless a catestrophic mechanical failure occured.
Earlier this week the car was parked on the street and a neighbor's car rolled down her driveway (at 10 mph?) and broadsided my car. The point of impact was the end of my bumper. Visually the damage looks minimal. The bumper is shoved over about 2 inches and and the plastic is wrinkld op at the point of impact. The plastic flanges on the grill sheared off. The lower front portion of the fender is warped inward but the paint is not damaged and the turn signal lenses and headlamps are intact. It all looks very minor.
However, the big issue is this: The impact pushed my car sideways into the curb. The wheel (which was already dinged and was awaiting replacement) is bent. The body shop indiceted that the unibody requires some straightening, but "nothing that cannot be corrected"
The question I have is can this kind of damage ever REALLY be corrected? The insurance company has indicated that this may treat it as a total loss. I'm not sure if I should accept the loss and start over with a completely different car or try to keep is and at least get it repaired mechanically? Any advise?
