I buy used cars...those 5-7 year old cars with 100K on the clock that need a little work. I pay cash for them, so that I'm not wasting money on interest. I then do the work on them myself if they need repairs. I then drive the cars for several years until they are pretty much scrap metal, and cannot go any further. The thing is that I will do extensive repairs to a vehicle that most people will never touch. For instance, rebuilding an engine myself will cost about $500-$1000 without performance goodies. Rebuilding an engine yourself in an otherwise decent condition vehicle is a real bargain because it restores the powerplant back to like-new condition. Imagine buying a brand new car for $1000!

Most automobiles when purchased in this fashion are a real bargain, especially well-built European cars...like SAAB's! European vehicles have a bit more expensive parts, but they are made to run a LONG time. My "car payments" are purchases at the parts counter...at what averages out to less than $100 or so a month.

My '88 Chevy van is perhaps the most inexpensive vehicle I've owned. I purchased it with a bad transmission for $3000 in 1994. A new transmission was $650 (Borg-Warner T5) I also took the engine apart and replaced gaskets and seals ($250 for parts). The van has needed only minor repairs in the 10 years I've had it (water pump, alternator, starter), totalling no more than $3000. The van has not passed the $10K in total cost of ownership. I am going to paint it soon, and renovate the interror, which may push it over that limit. Will I ever get the money out of it if I put it on the streetside to sell it....no! I couldn't get $1000 for that thing...but the van is worth much more to me than that in usefulness and I don't plan to sell it or scrap it anytime soon!
