No need to pull the engine. In addition to Andy's tips, I would replace the crankseal at the same time. Leaky crank seal allows oil to attack the rubber donut in the harmonic balancer.
The trick to getting the bolt out is locking the flywheel motionless. A large screwdriver stuck into the teeth behind the clutch cover next to the starter drive works. Or with a helper under the car the screwdriver can be stuck into the teeth at the flywheel inpsection hole. Either way a helper is best.
It also helps to unbolt the 4th pulley first to get better access to the main pulley bolt. For teh main bolt, your socket might also be too deep and need to be ground down to clear the firewall.
When installing new valve cover gasket, make sure you get all the kinks out. A shot of spray gasket tack or loctite 518 will keep the gasket in the groove when lowering the cover back on.
