which is what I would search. Buy the MY-T-Vac and you can check every line from the engine to see if they are holding tight vacuum. This the classic source of idle swings, in my experience from 25 years of this work.
I don't know the AIC valve well, just know that lube was recommended by Townsend. Most things I have repaired on C900, using his advice, have proven to be dead on the money.
Why does popcorn pop? I don't know either, so go lube the AIC and see what happens. Did you clean out the throttle body, just behind the plate?
Several of my C900's were jumpy until I did this, then they smoothed right out.
